  • Following the plan: weekly rundown

    Posted on June 23, 2019June 23, 2019

I finally finalized and posted my Ridge Run training plan…eh, “plan” last week. So far (y’know, a whole week) I’ve followed it pretty exactly. Go me. Tuesday 3.3 miles with a wee bit of speedwork (1-2-3-2-1 min ladder w/ equal rest). I’m not focusing on speed for obvious reasons, but speedwork is good for hills […]

I had a reasonable 12-week plan mapped out for this race, but then stuff happened, so now I’m scrambling to fit the most important bits of training into the next 8 weeks. The most important bits, for me, are 1) it’s steep and technical; 2) it will probably take me around 8 hours to finish, […]

  • Back in action: weekly rundown

    Posted on June 17, 2019June 17, 2019

The muscle spasm that knocked me out of commission last week hung around longer than I would’ve liked, but I think it is finally 100% gone. And I finally made it over 20 miles for the week, but I put strength training on pause as I was afraid it would re-aggravate the muscle. Monday 2.3 […]

  • New views: weekly rundown

    Posted on June 3, 2019June 3, 2019

The weather is suddenly acting like summer up here, so I’m trying to adjust to the heat. (Heat = in the 70s. Acclimate = I should wake up earlier. It’s all relative.) Other than that, I had a mostly good running week. Tuesday 1 neighborhood mile with Kara plus 2 by myself. Wednesday Two laps […]

  • Chasing the snow line: weekly rundown

    Posted on May 27, 2019May 27, 2019

This week I more or less started Ridge Run training. The race is 11 weeks from Saturday, and I need all those weeks. I have a (very) rough outline for training, which I’m planning to post Wednesday hopefully. Here’s what “week 0” looked like. Monday 3.1 road miles with Kara. Tuesday Lower body strength workout. […]

I’d like to say I haven’t posted in several weeks because the end of the semester was busy. Which it was, of course, but the more proximate cause was actually insomnia. I normally have a couple weeks of insomnia every spring (because spring is the worst), but this year a couple weeks stretched into a […]

  • I’m melting/Trees are terrifying

    Posted on March 25, 2019March 25, 2019

After our massive snow dump a few weeks ago, we are already well into spring meltdown mode. This is what the streets in my neighborhood looked like last weekend: The week before last I did all my running (a total of 14 miles) around town in these less-than-delightful conditions. Thankfully, last week was spring break, […]

  • Yellowstone City 30K recap

    Posted on October 31, 2018

I ran the Yellowstone City 30K on September 23rd. This recap is really long without any intro blather, so I’m going to jump right in. The race was mainly an out-and-back, but the start and finish diverged slightly to begin and end at two different lodges in Paradise Valley (the area north of the north […]

  • ‘Tis the season…(not THAT season)

    Posted on September 24, 2018

Lest anyone be misled by the title: I am emphatically not one of those people who gets excited about Christmas the second the calendar says it’s fall. One month at a time, please. But since fall has officially made its appearance, we can get excited about that now. Fall means that ’tis the season…. For […]

  • The start-of-school whirlwind review, and Glacier

    Posted on September 18, 2018

Even though I am done with the classwork for my PhD, it still takes a few weeks to adjust to a new school year. It’s partly just having a more structured schedule, but it’s also that the school year still manages to be busier than summer. I’m teaching 4 sections of a freshman lab this […]

One is on my hand...because your hands have to help with clambering over some of these rocks. Oh, and I predicted my finish time within 5 minutes, which I think is pretty impressive for a 20-mile race with ~15,000 feet of elevation change.
