I couldn’t pick a topic and stick to it this week…so here’s a hodgepodge of 5 things I’m currently up to.

Recipes from cookbooks. We have a decent shelfful of cookbooks that I’d been neglecting in favor of my Evernote recipe stash. Recently I’ve been turning to the cookbooks first when meal planning, and we’re discovering a lot of new favorites. I’ve also realized, however, that a lot of my cookbooks were published before kale became trendy. “Hey, cookbook index, show me something good to make with all this kale from my CSA.” “What are you looking at me for? I’m a cookbook from the 90s.”

Lots of cold tea. I usually don’t vary my daily drinks much: coffee in the morning, often hot herbal tea at night, occasionally caffeinated hot tea in late morning/early afternoon, and water the rest of day. But I started craving tea around the clock recently, and it’s been too hot to be sipping hot tea all day.

Solution: cold brewing herbal and low-caffeine teas to supplement my standard water drinking habits. Just add tea bags or loose tea to water – I use 2 bags for a quart jar – and let it steep overnight in the fridge. So far I’ve been sipping apricot green tea, vanilla grapefruit white tea, and ginger tea. And I just finished bottling a batch of kombucha for higher-caffeine cold tea.

Hiking, backpacking, and camping trips for the next couple months. Honestly, I’ve avoided planning far in advance this summer because it’s a mystery how I’ll feel on any given day. But I need more of these things for my sanity. So I decided to go ahead and plan a few out, and keep my fingers crossed.

Cooler weather. The air has been just barely chilly when I stepped outside the past couple mornings. By September it will be nippy every morning, but I’m impatient and I want it to stay cool now. Bring on autumn.

A haircut. I have too much hair – and yes, it still looks pretty much like that photo in the sidebar. But it’s really thick – every hairdresser I’ve ever been to has commented on how much hair I have. So yes, I still have too much hair, and I’m looking forward to cutting even more off next week. Here’s one of my inspiration photos.

Pick a “currently” and fill in the blank!

  2. You’re not wrong about the cookbooks! You certainly won’t find quinoa or kale in my mum’s cookbooks!

I’m currently anticipating our trip to Hawaii! Can not wait!!!!

Right? My older cookbooks use other “uncommon” grains that aren’t trendy anymore though!

  3. Such a great read. Cooking from cookbooks seems like lots of fun, Hannah! Where are your going backpacking next?

Sadly backpacking season is pretty much over for this year…I probably won’t decide until we get closer to next summer.
