I’m really good at tapering: weekly rundown

No, really. I’m not at all the kind of person who gets antsy during taper. I am done training for this race, let me sleep. Especially after last weekend’s runs, which combined were almost the distance of the Ridge Run – I was extra tired most of the week, and so ended up doing even less running than I planned. But that’s fine, because, you know, taper. Sleep is more important than running now.


Strength workout. I scaled this back but actually was pretty sore afterwards – I think it was at least partly carried over from the weekend runs.


3 miles easy.


We camped Friday night, so I was able to get up and run some trails directly from my bed.

I headed out on the trail nearest the campground, which I thought would take me to another trail to a waterfall, but apparently I took a wrong turn because the trail kind of followed more or less parallel to the road. It started out as flat gravel trail

Turned into single track

Intersected a grassy path which turned out to be a dead end

And eventually took me back to the road.

I did 4.1 miles, then took Kara for a walk because she was upset about not running with me (one of her legs was bothering her).

Our campsite featured this giant mushroom – turns out it is an edible type and I’m a little sad we didn’t eat it. We also found some probably-hallucinogenic mushrooms, which I will pass on, thanks.

We planned to go swimming in the reservoir after packing up camp, but unfortunately it was suffering an algae and/or cyanobacteria bloom. Whatever it was, it formed tiny discrete spheres instead of stringy green stuff. I waded out just to see what it was like – it felt like wading in bubble tea. So weird.

I think this may be a type of algae called Volvox that forms spherical colonies, but I’m no algae expert.

Weekly total: 7.1 miles, 500 feet elevation gain. Ridge Run this Saturday!

  9. Good luck this weekend! I’m normally not a super antsy taper person, but I do usually feel like I’m going to injury myself and I should be wrapped in bubble tape during the taper period.
